Protecting the Air We Breathe - A Deeper Look at Legionnaires’ Disease |
CDC investigations of Legionnaires’ disease outbreaks show that the most common places for getting the disease are hotels, long-term care facilities, and hospitals. Preparedness and Emergency Response Learning Centers - National Resource List |
CDC provides funding for 14 Preparedness and Emergency Response Learning Centers (PERLCs) across the U.S. These centers provide training to state, local, and tribal public health authorities within self-defined service areas and meet partners' unique workforce development needs in the area of public health preparedness and response; specialized training, education, and consultation. This CDC webpage provides links to each center. Many PERLCs have resources for long term care facilities. |

Use of Mental Health Services by Nursing Home Residents After Hurricanes |
The authors of this report discuss the findings of their study on the evaluation of pre- and post-hurricane mental health service use in Florida nursing homes. Results indicated that although most nursing homes provided some type of mental health service during normal operations, disaster-related mental health services were not routinely provided to residents. The authors also found that receiving facilities were more likely than evacuating facilities to provide treatment to evacuated residents.

Providing Shelter to Nursing Home Evacuees in Disasters: Lessons from Hurricane Katrina |
The authors examined nursing home preparedness needs by studying the experiences of nursing homes that sheltered evacuees from Hurricane Katrina. Interviews were conducted with nursing home administrators that sheltered evacuees in four states. Findings: Nursing homes should develop and practice procedures to shelter and provide long-term access to mental health services following a disaster. Nursing homes should be integrated into community disaster planning and be classified in an emergency priority category similar to hospitals. |

GAO 06826 Limitations in Federal Evacuation Assistance for Health Facilities Should be Addressed |
Hurricane Katrina demonstrated difficulties involved in evacuating communities and raised questions about how hospitals and nursing homes plan for evacuations and how the federal government assists. The Government Accountability Office assessed the evacuation of hospital patients and nursing home residents. They examined (1) the challenges hospital and nursing home administrators faced, (2) the extent to which limitations exist in the design of the National Disaster Medical (NDMS) to assist with patient evacuations, and (3) the federal requirements for hospital and nursing home disaster and evacuation planning. |
