Improving Long Term Care Resiliency: Using Proven Mutual Aid Concepts for Disasters |
This is a presentation handout of a workshop conducted at the 2015 Really Ready 5 Conference of the California Association of Health Care Facilities. The presentation describes MutualAidPlan.org, an emergency planning system that some states are using to complement local, regional and state emergency response strategies. In the MutualAidPlan.org planning system, participating healthcare facilities commit to helping each other in an emergency to support resident evacuation or provide resources and assets to avoid evacuation through participation in the mutual aid plan.

Helping Nursing Homes Prepare for Disasters |
This article published in the journal Health Affairs, describes the findings and outcomes of the John A. Hartford Foundation funded initiative called Hurricane and Disaster Preparedness for Long Term Care Facilities. The project was awarded to the Florida Health Care Association. The authors of this paper describe the planning, research, and dissemination efforts of the Hartford grantees. This paper also provides insights into successful disaster grant making, noting foundations’ unique flexibility, strategic and long-term view, and ability to be a neutral convener of stakeholders that can help grantees work toward achieving major policy change.

Findings of the National Long Term Care Evacuation Transportation Summit |
This is a report of the 2009 National Long Term Care Evacuation Transportation Summit, sponsored by the John A. Hartford Foundation and hosted by the Florida Health Care Association and the American Health Care Association. The Summit convened leaders from diverse industries to deliberate about how to ensure that nursing homes have access to appropriate and sufficient transportation resources during a disaster. Among the forty delegates were representatives from the federal and state governments, transportation industry, public health, emergency operations, and long-term care.

FHCA Emergency Management Guide for Nursing Homes (2008) |
The EM Guide for Nursing Homes was developed in 2008 through a grant funded by the John A. Hartford Foundation to the Florida Health Care Association. Development of the Guide was done in partnership with the Florida Department of Health Bureau of Preparedness and Response. The 265-page guide includes five sections, including the basic emergency operations plan elements, sample appendices, explanation of hazard types, incident command, and training. |
